We review intern applications on a rolling basis during certain time periods.

For Fall applications, the application form will be available on our website in early July until August 31. We reviewing applications on August 1 and continue until September 15 or we fill our internship positions.

For Spring applications, the application form will be available in early October until November 30. We review applications starting November 1 until December 15 or until we fill our internship positions.

You may also submit an application for a J-term internship (during January) during the Spring application round. 

We receive the highest volume of applications for Summer internships. The application form will be available on our website in early February until March 31.

We review applications starting March 1 until April 15 or the positions are filled. 

If you are applying for a fellowship or other summer funding grant, please also review the information on the Fellowships page. 

Be sure to carefully review our guidelines for fellowships. The Advocates welcomes interns through fellowship programs. We require that you submit your internship application at least 4 weeks prior to your fellowship deadline and that you email fellowship information to internships@advrights.org.

All internships are unpaid. Interns are encouraged to work with outside funding sources, fellowships, work study programs, or arrange for academic credit.

The Advocates is not able to sponsor interns for visa purposes. If you are able to secure a visa on your own, or will be in the United States as a foreign student or in another capacity, you are welcome to apply for an internship.

During the school year, we ask that interns commit to at least 8 hours per week, and up to 12 or more hours, depending on the intern’s own schedule, fellowship, and availability. We additionally ask that interns be available for 4-hour blocks of time – either morning or afternoon (9-1 or 1-5) -- with certain exceptions.

During the summer, many interns are full time, working Monday to Friday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.

We only accept interns to work in our established and existing program areas or on current projects.

The Advocates regularly works with students who are interning for credit. Please note on your internship application that you will be seeking credit through your school, and any special requirements of your program (for example, if you require supervision by a particular professional like an attorney). Like the fellowship application, if there is a deadline for your internship class, please make sure The Advocates has your application at least 4 weeks in advance of that deadline and email this information to internships@advrights.org.

The Advocates collaborates with MSW programs to accept applications for social work internships. If your program already partners with The Advocates, please apply through your school. If your school does not yet partner with The Advocates, please email internships@advrights.org to discuss potential new partnerships and available internships.

Foreign language fluency, policy analysis (particularly education-related), graphic design, law students, SEO experience, familiarity with CMS platforms. This can change, depending on program needs. If you have a skill that you think would be useful, please note it in your application.

We have hosted interns who are recent graduates. Often, non-students work with The Advocates as volunteers, either long-term or short-term, on a variety of projects. To learn more about volunteering with The Advocates, please visit https://www.theadvocatesforhumanrights.org/Volunteer.

We have hosted interns who work across programs. When you submit your application, please make sure you indicate your primary interest and your interest in working on more than one internship. We cannot guarantee placement with multiple programs, as this depends on the needs and schedule of both programs. Most of our interns work with one program only.

Yes. January is a time of year when we have a great need for interns, but usually fewer interns available. The application form will be available in early October, and applications for J-term interns are reviewed beginning November 1.

We review applications on a rolling basis during specific periods of time. We encourage you to apply early if you are interested in interning with a particular program. If it is past the time in which we review applications, but before we post the application for the next semester, we indicate on our website if internship spots are still available.

The writing sample you select should showcase your writing and research skills. Typically, an academic paper that is 2-5 pages in length will work. If you are applying for a Communications Internship and have graphic design experience, please consider submitting any design examples you have created.
